Lower Merripit Cottage was originally built in the 16th century as part of the ancient longhouse farm settlement of Lower Merripit that dates back over 1000 years. It is located in the very middle of Dartmoor close to the small village of Postbridge, 19 miles from Plymouth and 20 miles from Exeter. Lower Merripit Farm has been working hard over the last 21 years to protect and enhance areas of the farm that are rich in rare flora and fauna. Our growing methods are all organic and we have been carrying out an extensive tree-planting programme. We maintain two organic species-rich flower meadows, which we harvest with a vintage tractor and bailer. Buzzard, heron, tawny owls, badger, red deer, roe deer and other wildlife are regular visitors here. The small stream carries salmon up to higher spawning grounds.

Условия размещения

The cottage is situated in a secluded valley surrounded by trees, peat land and the open moor. There is a large garden that backs onto a wild flower meadow. The cottage has undergone regular improvement and refurbishment; it is cosy and decorated in a simple and traditional style. There are two sitting rooms in the cottage. The large sitting room, originally part of a medieval barn, has beams, a huge wood burner and deep granite window seats. The second smaller sitting room contains the original large granite inglenook fireplace (now fitted with a wood stove) and traditional bread oven. It also contains a small library of books about Dartmoor and related topics. The traditional kitchen has the original granite fireplace, granite worktops, a stone sink, oven/grill and hob plus dishwasher, and a south-facing door that opens directly out into the garden. There are extra tables, chairs and benches so eight people can be seated for meals. There is also a scullery at the front of the cottage with washing machine, tumble drier, extra sink, and space for wet clothes and dogs. There is a downstairs toilet as well as the upstairs bathroom with shower. A narrow spiral staircase leads from the hall and a second wider staircase from the sitting room.
